The Chinese character above is over 3000 years old. The syllable, pronounced 'ma' translates as 'useful plant' and refers exclusively to the hemp plant. As a source of nutrition, hemp seed is second to none. As a source of industrial fibre it is second only to 300 year-old tropical hardwoods although it requires only 100 days to grow!!!
